During the Piscine we prohibit the use of AI assistants. Let us tell you why:

We acknowledge that AI can be a great tool in any programmer's repertoire. Throughout your journey at 42, you will use AI in many different ways. It is a complex tool, though. It is very easy to trick yourself when using AI, thinking you learned/understood something, while in reality, you just let the AI do the thinking.

Solving a problem is hard and cumbersome. Telling an AI to solve it is easy.

We want to focus on the first part.

Peer-to-Peer

42 follows a peer-to-peer approach. Communication and discussions among Students are essential to maintain this approach. In Piscines that had access to AI, we could see a decrease in interaction and debate among the students.

Problem solving

Problem-solving is one of the key skills you should strengthen during the Piscine. By asking an AI for assistance and explanations, you skip ahead in the problem-solving process. This will leave gaps in your skills that are hard to compensate for later on.

Research

There are lots of concepts and terminology you will stumble upon while researching the assignments of the Piscine. You will pick up things that are not strictly necessary but useful to know. This peripheral knowledge will help you put your learnings into perspective.

Independence

There will be situations in the Piscine where you have to show your skills without access to any resources other than your brain and a Terminal.

Plagiarism

At 42Berlin, every code you submit has to be written by yourself. Submitting code that you found somewhere or that was written by someone else or an AI is considered plagiarism. You can read more about our academic integrity rules 🧑‍🎓 Academic Integrity .
